chasingangela: (angela is annoyed)

Angela was playing Tetris on her new-old phone when her old-new phone rang. She picked it up, noticing her parents' number on the caller ID.

"Hello?" she said, figuring her mom was scheduling stuff for the weekend. Graduation weekend. That was weird.

"Angela!" Her mom sounded oddly chipper, in an exhausted way. "Are you all right, sweetie?"

"Of course," Angela said, vaguely annoyed. "I'm done with classes, so I'm just waiting to graduate.' She bit a thumbnail. "When will you and dad and Danielle be here?"

"That's kind of why I'm calling," her mother began reluctantly. "Angela, your father slipped on some aioli and fell in the kitchen and -- well, he'll be fine, but right now he's in a cast."

Angela raised an eyebrow. "Seriously, he's all right?"

"He will be," Patty Chase repeated. "He's just -- not supposed to travel." She was talking fast, now. "And Danielle has a state gymnastics meet on Sunday morning, and she is throwing a fit about missing it because she thinks she'll be too big to compete next year, and you know this is the worst time of the year for the print shop, and your grandfather is back in the hospital for more tests, and ..."

Suspicion was dawning in Angela's mind. "Are you going to miss my high school graduation?" she asked, semi-hysteric. "Your oldest daughter is graduating once and I haven't seen you guys in months and you're skipping out?"

There was a long pause on the other end. "I was going to come," her mom said. "Let Camille Cherski take care of your dad and your sister and represent the Chases all on my lonesome. But -- so this morning I ran into that Rayanne -'

"Don't call her that -"

"Rayanne Graff, she was visiting Brian Krakow, or something like that, and she asked how you were. And I told her about you, and how well you were, and that your graduation was tomorrow, and a little bit about the craziness around us traveling now." Another hesitation. "And she, um, suggested that she could take the graduation tickets off my hands." An even longer pause. "She is very persuasive."

"So RAYANNE is coming?" Angela asked, blinking. That ... might not be awful, though she was still hurt her family wouldn't be there. "Who's she bringing? I mean, with the other two tickets."

"I hope Sharon and Brian," Patty said. "I ... couldn't get a clear answer out of her. She promised you'd be happy, and, honestly, the whole thing happened so fast ..." Her tone was apologetic. "Is there any way this can be okay for you, Angela?"

Angela sighed, exaggerating the sound so her mother would know how put out she was. "It's fine," she said in a small voice. "I'll be home in two weeks anyhow."

"I know. And, sweetie, we'll throw the biggest graduation party in Pittsburgh when you are," Patty promised. She might have said more, but there was a terrible clattering sound. "I think your father is trying to rearrange things in the kitchen again," she confided. "I'll go take care of him. Call us and let us know how graduation went?"

Angela promised she would and hung up, very confused but not unhappy. Her door was partially open, and she would welcome company.

Parker was wandering. And avoiding phone messages. So seeing Angela's door open, she knocked on the frame. "Hey, Angela."

"And how." Parker smiled and laced her fingers together, stretching out her arms. "Two weeks. Then I take a flight to Moscow. I'm going to miss this place, but any time I think of staying... I end up shuddering. You ready?"

"Yes." Parker nodded hard. "I want to take everyone with me. But it's not like that would even be fun for them," she added ruefully. "As much as I'd get out of it. But the thought of one more gremlin incursion, or another invasion-- okay, it might still be fun. But I've done that. Time for something new."

"Fie on that," Parker shook her finger, then grinned. "Although the idea of going back to a world without vampires? Holds a very strong appeal. Don't tell Angel I said that." She shook her head. "Besides. You'll never be really ordinary again. You've seen too much."

Parker laughed. "Mutants, superheroes, vampires, aliens-- and that's the simple stuff. Real life is going to seem so *calm* after this." She cocked her head. "I still didn't get to do half the things I said I would before I left. Maybe in the next two weeks. I'm supposed to visit River's home for a couple days. Maybe I'll get a chance to visit Special Collections one last time too."

"Mmm. An Earth colony in the future. Although most of the time, I think she lives on a spaceship that travels between planets." She grinned, eyebrows going up. "I had a good time when we visited before, if you don't count all the violence and dead bodies. River promised there wouldn't be any of that on this trip."

Parker held her fingers about an inch apart, and slowly widened the gap. "Maybe... just... a little?" She laughed. "Since I'm going to miss whatever the first invasion is, one more fight? That's not too much to ask for, right?"

Parker blinked. "There's a thought. Think I can convince my dad that his punch was spiked, if it does happen?"

Parker gave her a sympathetic look, and said, "That's... good. Although I was looking forward to seeing your dad again. Your family's pretty cool." She looked curious. "Your best friend from home's coming, though? That's good."

"My dad and his bodyguard, probably, although he doesn't get here until Saturday. At least he's supposed to. Sydney's planning on showing up tomorrow. I may drag him to the party on the beach," Parker said mischeviously. "Angelo wanted to come, but I sent him three extra boxes of Lucky Charms not to do anything stupid."

Parker shuddered. "Yeah. The day they meet up again... I plan on being on another continent." She smirked. "I'm looking forward to tomorrow's party. And the Graduation ceremony. It's just everything after that which has me wondering." She shook her head. "We'll do something fun before we're both out of here."

"Ooo. Great idea. I'm going to miss Theodoric's. And Sven." Parker sighed wistfully. "Definitely, some time before we go. And show our best faces to the world when we cross that Causeway."

"Definitely. Sleep well, Angela. We're almost there," Parker said over her shoulder as she headed for the door. "Thirty-six hours and counting. Night!"

There's a knock on the door and a head peers in. "Hey. How's it going?"

"Oh?" Marty said with a grin. "Did I miss a special occasion? Or is it just because I'm awesome as a boyfriend?"

Marty smirked a little as he remember his first phone from Bridge. "Ah. A Bridge Carson special," he snickered. "Does it do anything crazy?"

Marty was now holding the phone with a lot more interest and care.

"So. No matter what would happen we could... yeah. That's awesome," he said quietly.

"I... I really like that," Marty said after he finally swallowed the lump in his throat."

He cleared his throat a little bit and leaned over to give Angela a kiss.

"Thank you."

"Yeah," Marty said letting himself be distracted. "She says she'll be here tomorrow and that she has a couple of surprises for me. I'm hoping that it isn't food. You're Dad'll be here to prevent any food poisoning right?"

"Rayanne?" Marty said laughing. "I'm sorry. I know your Dad hurt himself but the idea of Rayanne and your Mom having that conversation."

"I'm not sure there'll be anything standing on the island when Rayanne leaves," Marty joked.

"Maybe. Given the right encouragement," Marty teased before leaning over for a quick kiss. "I got a couple of things to do before Marcella shows up with God knows what. See you tomorrow?"
