Angela's phone rang as she put away her journal and shouldered her bookbag, ready for class.
She gave it an exasperated look -- who calls at 8 a.m.? -- but picked it up anyhow.
"Morning."
...
"Jordan? I -- I can't believe you found this number. Hi, hi."
...
"No, I haven't been by the place he works in a couple weeks. Is he, like, avoiding me? Because I never see him in town."
...
"What happened to his boss? You're kidding. You're kidding."
...
"Not really. But, I mean, he seemed like a great guy, and ... seriously, he's gone?"
...
"Wait, you're coming here?"
...
"Right, just to drop off the thing. I get that."
...
"Um, wait. If you, like, have some extra time? There's this diner you might like. The owner is my best friend's dad. He's kind of a grouch, but the food is good. So, um, if you want to get dinner or something ... We haven't talked since that ... thing."
...
"I know. It was just a ... thing. No big deal. But still. Talking is good, right? I mean, we're friends, aren't we?"
...
"Okay. See you tonight."
...
"I know. Bye."
She seemed to be in a much better, and more awake, mood as she left her room.
