UNY Dorm Room, Saturday Afternoon

It was Angela's 19th birthday, but she didn't have any plans to celebrate, really. She'd let herself have a caramel latte at work --- ooh, rebellion -- and was now flopped on her bed, trying to do some reading for her women's lit final.

Of course, Virginia Woolf wouldn't do her much good if she didn't make it past freshman year, but Angela wasn't letting herself think that far ahead.

Angela's response was a happy squeal. "Oh my god, you guys remembered! And you so did not have to."

"Hi!" Rickie returned. "How's the Big Apple? We're going to go shopping there this summer, right?"

"New York is, um, still here," Angela answered carefully. "My classes are good. And one of my friends from Fandom was out here last weekend, we went up the Empire State building and were totally dorks at the top and this security guard -"

Rayanne cut her off. "Oh my god! We. Totally have to do that. Our semester at CCAC" - both Rayanne and Ricky were enrolled, at least in theory, at the Community College of Allegheny County -- "ends on, like, May 15. And then we will come out there and we will so have a time and you'll show us the clubs where they don't card, right?"

"I can show you them," Angela answered. "I'm not so big on clubbing lately."

She put a smile into her voice. "But you guys should so come out here. I haven't seen you since spring break."

"That's not our fault," Rickie shouted. "You never come home."

"And you were never big on clubbing," Rayanne reminded her friend.

"I've been busy," Angela frowned into the phone. "It's school and work and Marty and ... sorry."

Rickie had one of those weird intuitive leaps he sometimes had. Angela sounded tired and stressed out, too much so for her birthday. "Is that all that's going on, Ange? And you can totally tell me to go to hell if I'm being nosy."

Rayanne gave Rickie a bzuh? face. Angela sounded fine to her.

"Rickie!" Angela exclaimed, rolling over on the bed to a more comfortable position. "... I would never tell you to go to hell."

"Nothing bad is going on."

"So something is going on," Rayanne said logically. "because if it was nothing, you would say it was nothing."

"Chaaaaaaaaase...."

Angela sighed. She knew she couldn't keep a secret from those two.

"You have to swear not to tell Krakow," she cautioned. "Or Sharon. Or Danielle. Or, anyone who has ever talked to my parents."

"She flunked out," Rayanne announced melodramatically, hand over the phone mouthpiece. "It's okay, Angela, you can go work for your dad again. Or go be an artist. College sucks."

"I did not flunk out!" Angela whined.

"Sorry, when you start with a list of who cannot know something ... " Rayanne pointed out.

"It's a logical assumption," Rickie agreed.

"It so, so is," Rayanne said. "So you've either dropped out, lost your job, gotten arrested, gotten married, or you're pregnant."

There was a long pause. "The last one. When did you turn psychic?" Angela grumped.

There was a high-pitched squeal from Rickie in the background.

"Oh my god, you are totally kidding, right?" he said, once he could speak again.

"... no," Angela had to admit. "I have told, like, nobody yet."

"Nobody" meaning "everyone she had talked to in the last two weeks who had known her for more than a nanosecond."

Rickie squealed happily again; Rayanne held up a finger to silence him. "Shit, Angela, what are you going to do? This is, like, big drama, I should offer you a drink except ..."

"Except," Angela agreed, toying with her bedspread.

Quietly she said, "I think we're keeping it."

"Oh."

After that, Rayanne didn't say anything. Rickie, though, jumped in.

"That's awesome, babies are such, such a blessing. Do you know what you're gonna call it?" He paused. "I should quit saying it. When are you do?"

"I call it, it," Angela informed him slowly, noticing Rayanne's silence. "Um, maybe Graham for a boy, for my dad? And I like Lauren or Andrea for a girl."

"It -- he or she, sorry -- will get here around Halloween."

Rickie was saying something about the names being pretty with Rayanne grabbed the phone again. "Wow, um ... congratulations?" Privately she was very glad it wasn't her, but she could tell Angela was trying to be happy. "I mean, if that's, like, what you want to hear."

"It is," Angela was defiant. "I mean, it's not what I expected, but ... it's a blessing, right? And I couldn't ... um."

"It's like in tenth grade," Rayanne agreed. "If you can't say the real thing and not 'um,' you so should not be allowed to do um."

"How are you telling your parents?"
